Narrow strip of land that runs along the outer edge of thecoast by Pamlico Sound  sounds can get rough they are rather shallow average depth is around six feet  is the outer banks  separated by the mainland as
Outer banks are pierced by a number of inlets through which boats can pass one is the ocracoke inlet. ocracoke is below Hattereras  that is the name of the island and the town
